"City2 Sea’s – Marine Science Learning Center” – 1/29/11 Trip
Come join us aboard our 38’ Cruisin’ Classroom that creates a connection the ocean that lasts forever!
Remember your first time on the ocean? On Saturday, January 29th 20+ teenagers from the Animo Leadership Charter H.S. in Inglewood, CA had the opportunity to collect live specimens, examine them under microscopes, perform hands-on learning experiments, be the captain of a boat, learn about navigation and boat safety, and see a grey whale. Circe departed K-7 dock in King Harbor Marina at 10:00 am.

We were honored to have three very special guests aboard to help our students learn:

BERNARDO ALPS Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist and member of the Cabrillo Whalewatch Advisory Committee Past President for the American Cetacean Society-Los Angeles Chapter.
DIANE ALPS Cabrillo Whalewatch Naturalist and member of the Cabrillo Whalewatch Advisory Committee President, American Cetacean Society-Los Angeles Chapter Board of Directors Diane is employed as the Programs Coordinator at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium
DIANE SADLER Diane is a charter member of the Dive Industry Association. Membership in the Western Society of Naturalists allows her to keep abreast of advances in marine sciences. Immersed in diving since the late 1960‘s, Lorraine began teaching diving, marine biology and ecology to scuba divers. In college in the early 1970‘s, Lorraine expanded her teaching to include elementary school children while also working in a dive store. She developed lesson plans and taught for 35 years for the Las the Virgenes Outdoor Education program as well as working with other school districts in Southern California. Since 1991 Lorraine has worked as a CHT for the University of Southern California Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber on Catalina Island.

Captain Wayne and Captain Patty did a great job with the kids. They put the kids within 20 yards of a grey whale. Later that morning as Captain Patty backed the boat down, Captain Wayne (also our microbiologist) went out on the swim step to collect a jellyfish in a 5 gallon bucket. All of the students took turns touching the jellyfish…luckily it was not the species that inflicts a bad sting.

When we returned to the slip, specimens were viewed under the microscopes and lesson plans were reviewed with our favorite teacher, Mark Friedman. After a fun adventure at sea, the kids and adults were treated to a BBQ at the dock.

Redondo Beach based, City2 Sea is the newest program from Kids & Fishing; an all volunteer environmental / educational nonprofit organization that educates and expands young inspired minds from the inner-city through marine science, hands-on learning experiments, and environmental awareness.

A very special thanks to West Marine & Raymarine for providing electronics for this trip, Pettit Marine Paint for the bottom paint, Magma for the BBQ, and Flying Cloud Yachts in Long Beach for helping us to build a strong foundation for our new program this year!

Donations from West Marine, Flying Cloud Yachts, Mercury Marine, Raymarine, Teleflex, King Harbor Marina, Cerritos Bahia Marina, Costco, Pettit Marine Paint, Boatswain’s Locker, Basin Marine, King Harbor Marine Center, Magma, Crown Plaza Hotel, SEA TOW, Marina Diving Co., AES, ShurFlo, Brown Bros. Auto & Paint Shop, Taylor Made Products, LA County Supervisor Don Knabe and generous individual donors have made it possible for Kids & Fishing / City2 the Sea to reach more deserving, at-risk, inner-city children this year.
