Kids and Fishing Program



The following innovative educational programs are designed to create interactive, thought-provoking coastal activities that expose school-age children to the magnificence of marine life and the wonders of the Pacific Ocean. By completing a variety of activities listed below, participants will be rewarded with a day of fishing.

1. QuikSCience

The USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies and Quiksilver, Inc. have created an exciting new event in science education. The Challenge is a multi-faceted competition for student teams designed to spark their interest in science, the oceans, and aquatic environments. The Challenge also seeks to foster leadership qualities in young people through environmental awareness and stewardship.

2. Annual Coastal Clean-up with Heal the Bay Program:

Coastal Cleanup Day involves individuals, schools, community and company volunteer groups. Volunteers in Los Angeles County typically collect tens of thousands of pounds of trash and recyclables during a three-hour period. By filling out the trash "data cards" during the cleanup, volunteers are helping to identify and stop polluters in the future.

3. Santa Monica Pier Aquarium

Experience sea life in touch tanks, aquariums and under microscopes. Also, visit the Kid’s Corner. Fieldtrips for K-12 can be scheduled Monday through Friday by calling (310) 393-6149 ext. 105 to make a reservation.

4. Heal the Bay’s Key to the Sea Program:

This beach exploration program encourages K-5 students to use their senses, increase their observational skills and develop their sense of wonder. Program is free of charge once teachers have completed a one-day workshop. For information call (800) HEALBAY or email: key2sea@healthebay.org.

5. Heal The Bay’s Adopt-a-Beach Program:

School groups can participate in a beach clean-up activity. The program is free, and recycling and trash bags are provided. Call Tom Galassi at (800) HEALBAY ext. 145 one month in advance of your first planned event.

6. Heal The Bay’s Speakers Bureau:

Host a guest lecturer on topics such as how to prevent sewage and storm drain pollution, health risks at the beach and simple steps everyone can take to keep our beaches clean. 7. The SEA Laboratory:

8. Cabrillio Aquarium and Museum:

Displays 35 live exhibits, touch tanks, interactive displays, daily slide presentations and special events. Adults $5, children $1: groups of 10 or more must make reservations, 3720 Stephan White Dr., San Pedro, 310-548-7562

9. Coastal Art & Poetry Contest:

Sponsored by the California Coastal Commission, this contest is open to California students grades K-12. A $100 prize is awarded to 1st place submissions. Call 800-COAST-4U, or email: coast4u@coastal.ca.gov.

10. Save our Seas Curriculum:
